Jesus took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.) Luke 9:28-33
I want to make a note that I did not add the parenthetical statement there. That’s in the Bible! I can only imagine that by the time Luke recorded this amazing miracle which happened in the life of the disciples – that many jokes had been told at Peter’s expense.
“Hey, you guys remember when Elijah and Moses came down and hung out with Jesus for awhile to talk logistics?” Yeah, that was awesome, they were all so bright and so white – I didn’t know Moses was so tall.”
“Yeah, and remember when Peter said “Uh, hey, let’s make some statue thingies or something – cause this is totally awesome.” ha ha ha.
And Peter said “Okay, not this story again.”
Peter tended to be the guy who opened his big mouth a lot. Telling Jesus he didn’t need to die, etc. To his credit he was also the guy who opened his big mouth with the Great Confession. (Matthew 16:13-16)
But what I’m taking from this today – is that sometimes I should just shut up. I know I’m a preacher and everything. But that may be my problem. I never get myself in trouble (or look as stupid) when I keep my mouth shut.
As you go on in this passage – it almost looks like God just interrupts Peter’s sleep-induced babbling.
While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” Luke 9:34-35
God says “Shut up Peter and listen to Jesus.” (my paraphrase).
Really this was just another one of the many miracles that happened to help the disciples believe that Jesus really was the Son of God. But to me this represents what I do – I’m so like Peter.
Sometimes God just wants to show up and wants us to shut up. Peter wanted to erect “shelters (tabernacles)” in relation to an Old Testament feast – a representation of God’s deliverance of his people. Kind of like erecting a statue.
Peter wanted to DO something for God – nothing wrong with that. But God just wanted him to BE.
Oh brother, I hate it when I preach to myself.
Shut up.
Tim
